New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos

Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 — and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla’s rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox’s new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we’re not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new ‘channel changing’ technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel — the value doesn’t matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you’ll be able to switch channel, but it doesn’t do anything just yet (image after the break). Here’s hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

X-ray laser bakes solid plasma from aluminum foil, brings us closer to nuclear fusion

Nuclear fusion, like flying cars, is one of those transparent, dangling carrots that’ve been stymying the scientific community and tickling our collective noses for decades. But recent research out of the Department of Energy’s SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory might help us inch a few baby steps closer to that Jetsonian future. The experiment, conducted by a group of Oxford University scientists, utilized the DOE’s Linac Coherent Light Source — an X-ray laser capable of pulsing “more than a billion times brighter” than current synchrotron sources — to transmute a piece of aluminum foil heated to 3.6 million degrees Fahrenheit (or 2 million degrees Celsius) into a cube of solid plasma. So, why go to such lengths to fry a tiny piece of metal at that extreme temperature? Simple: to replicate conditions found within stars and planets. Alright, so it’s not that easy and we’re still a ways off from actually duping celestial bodies, but the findings could help advance theories in the field and eventually unlock the powers of the Sun. Until that fateful day arrives, however, we’ll just have to let these pedigreed pyros continue to play with their high-tech toys.

Pleasanton, CA (PRWEB) January 17, 2012

Scannx LLC, a leading developer of cloud-based document capture and document delivery software and services, announced today that it will demonstrate its Scannx Book ScanCenter, the next generation in self-service book scanning solutions, in Booth #2124 at the American Library Association Conference in Dallas, Texas, on January 20 – 23, 2012. Attendees who come by the booth for a demo can register to win an iPad 2.

By simply touching the Book ScanCenters touchscreen, library patrons and staff can scan and send book pages, documents, and photos to their Email, USB flash drive, SmartPhone, tablet, Google Docs, fax, or printer. The Scannx Book ScanCenter is the first self-service book scanning solution to send scanned images directly to an iPhone or iPad in PDF, searchable PDF and Word file formats.

Library patrons and staff can quickly and easily scan and send searchable and editable files to their smartphone or tablet without the cumbersome requirement to install software that needs to be configured with the scanners network IP address , said John C. Dexter, president and COO of Scannx. Documents sent to an iPhone or iPad can be stored in iBooks, thus allowing students to build their own personal library for research and collaboration. Moreover, library patrons and staff have the option to encrypt the files, if security and confidentiality are required, prior to uploading and storing in iBooks. Thus, we can customize this solution for scanning and storing sensitive information such as financial aid documents, student records, ID cards and medical records.

Scannx executive management team has over fifteen years experience in document imaging, developing book and document scanning solutions for its consulting clients with PC-based software architecture. However, with the emergence of widespread cloud computing services, Scannx saw an opportunity to bring cloud-based document imaging to the educational market. The Scannx team proceeded to develop new software that leverages the very powerful cloud-based image processing, forms recognition, and workflow software that clients would find cost-prohibitive to run on a PC based system.

The Scannx Book ScanCenter includes a 15 touchscreen computer bundled with the Scannx software, an 11 x 17 patented book-edge scanner that protects the spine of the book from damage, and is powered by ABBYY FineReader Technology to convert scanned images into PDF, searchable PDF and Word file formats with unmatched optical character recognition accuracy. The ABBYY FineReader engine recognizes up to 180 languages which are available from Scannx for an additional fee. The ScanCenter also offers an optional 45 page per minute automatic document feeder (ADF) for high speed scanning of documents. All systems are covered by a 1 year manufacturers warranty. Please visit http://www.scannx.com for more information or drop by Booth 2124 for a demo, and to register for the opportunity to win an iPad 2.

ABOUT SCANNX

Scannx LLC designs, develops, markets, and supports innovative document scanning solutions for the educational and municipality markets. Its patented Book ScanCenter features the industry’s first cloud-based scanning technology integrated with an 11″x 17″ high speed USB2.0 flatbed scanner with glass that comes to the beveled edge of the scanner. This patented book-edge design allows books to lay flat on each page, eliminating the blackened areas of text resulting from the page curvature at the book spine. As a result, the scan produces clearly readable text across the entire page. The book itself is also protected from damage to its spine, thereby reducing repair and replacement costs.

Through its easy-to-use Touchscreen interface, the Book ScanCenter allows students and library patrons alike to scan books and documents into PDF, searchable PDF, Word, JPEG, TIFF and PNG files and automatically store these files onto any digital repository to support an organizations GOING GREEN initiatives. Scan to destinations include USB flash drive, email as an attachment, Google Docs, Smartphones, tablets, fax and printer. Once stored in a digital format, students can search, retrieve, edit, email, or print those files from their PC. BeagleBone board boots up XBMC Eden, shows off its media prowess

BeagleBone XBMC

BeagleBoard isn’t letting the Raspberry Pi steal all the glory in the battle for low-cost computing supremacy. The $ 35 ARM11-based Pi may win on price, but at least the BeagleBone can hold its own in terms of power. After the Model B was demoed pushing XBMC and AirPlay capabilities, some intrepid devs managed to get the second beta of Eden up and running on the ARM A8 dev board. The vid stutters a bit during playback but, overall, it’s a respectable performance considering this is a CPU that would get laughed out of most modern smartphones. Head on after the break to see it in action.
